Girls Golf Wins States

In the past two years, the Girls’ Varsity Golf team finished 5th and 4th in the Division II state tournament respectively. But this year, the girls were eager and ready to take home the championship trophy. The team prepared all season long to compete in the state tournament. “I created a more challenging schedule which included three additional 18-hole tournaments and several matches against tougher teams,” says head coach Debby Horowitz. All of this preparation paid off for the team this year, with a final record of 11 wins and 2 losses, taking 2nd in the Chagrin Valley Conference, and placing 1st in both the sectional and district tournament for girl’s Division II golf.

All of these accomplishments led the team to compete in the State Tournament, which took place October 8-9th at the Ohio State Golf Course. After day one of the two-day tournament, the team trailed behind first place by only 5 strokes. “Our game plan was to relax and have fun,” says Horowitz, “I encouraged the girls to focus on their own game and not worry about our opponents or our current standings.” At the end of day two, with a final score of 329 points, the girls’ team won the Division II State Championship trophy, beating the runner-up team Dover by an amazing cushion of 11 strokes. Sophmore Isabella Joseph gave the team a lift with two scores of 78, which placed her ninth overall in the individual standings. Other standouts included Aly Gole and Haley Newman who both scored 82 on Saturday, and Meredith Cohen who scored an 87. Even if Victoria Chardiet’s score of 89 had counted, the team still would have won the state title. Rounding out the team this year is also outstanding freshman Dorothy Lowenstein.

This year is the first year on record that the Hawken’s Girls Golf team has taken home the state title. “I was beyond excited, jumping up and down with the girls,” Horowitz recalls, “I was also very proud of how the girls performed and their display of sportsmanship at the highest level.”

Congratulations to all members of the Girl’s Golf team this year, we are so very proud of you!
