Hawken Sports Update: Week of October 12th

We know how busy the school year is and we know how difficult it is to stay up to date with your favorite Hawken sports teams – but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.  For the remainder of the year, every Monday The Affirmative No will post sports scores, highlights, and accomplishments to our online paper.  Even better, these updates will be written by members of the athletic teams themselves, thus you will get the inside scoop from all of Hawken’s Varsity Teams.  Go Hawks!

Monday, October 12th

Boys Soccer by Bjoern Kluwe.  The Hawks won a hotly contested match against Perry High School 3-2 on Tuesday.  The team went out to Western Reserve on Thursday but unfortunately lost 2-0.

Girls Soccer by Affno Staff.  Last week, the girls’ soccer squad had one game against rival Hathaway Brown, which they tied 2 to 2. Excitingly, the team is as of now ranked 3rd in the state, and a serious contender to make a run at the state title.  Wish them luck this week as they begin their quest for a title in the state tournament.

Football by Jacob Cohen.  Last Friday, we defeated Independence [42 to 9] to improve to 6 and 1 for the season.  Jonathan Simmons was 5 for 5 on extra points, so congratulate him if you see him.

Field Hockey by Julia Hillenbrand.  This past week, the field hockey team defeated the Laurel Gators 6 to 2.  What made the win extra special was that it was senior night; thanks to everyone who came and cheered us on.

Girls Golf by Isabella Joseph.  Two weeks ago, the Girls Golf Team took third at sectionals qualifying us for the district tournament.  Last week, we played in Districts, which was played at a course called Tam O’ Shanter.  There we placed fifth. Sadly, we did not qualify for states as a team. But Isabella Joseph (me) qualified in the second position as an individual shooting a 78.  I’m playing at Ohio state course the 15,16, and 17th of October for the division 2 state tournament!

Girls Tennis by Nayana Ravishankar.  The Girls Tennis Team ended the season off very strong; we ended the year with a winning record!  Everyone had a pretty good run at sectionals, but unfortunately the section was tough this year so the draws weren’t in all of our favors. But Stephanie Shulman played amazing by winning sectionals and defeating the first singles player from Gilmore who got 3rd in states last year. She also had a good run in districts where she won her first match and lost the second. This year our district was one of the hardest so there were a lot of great players. Overall, I think it was a strong season and the underclassmen are only going to improve in the rest of their high school years – I cannot wait to see how this team will do next year!

Girls Volleyball by Alex Blake.  The Girls Volleyball Team currently holds a winning record and we’ll be starting playoffs next Tuesday. Our senior night is this upcoming Thursday and its volley for the cure. We’re having a bake sale this Thursday and a raffle to raise money for volley for the cure. It’ll be a good game against Richmond Heights so everyone should definitely come out and show your support.

Cross Country by Affno Staff.  The past week was truly a special one for both the boys and girls cross-country teams.  At the prestigious Andrews Osborne Academy Invitational, the girls team took second and the boys team took third.  Standout freshman Julia Aliazzi placed 5th overall at the Invitational, with a personal record time of 19 minutes and 56 seconds.
