Hawken Sports Update: Special Fall Playoff Edition

We know how busy the school year is and we know how difficult it is to stay up to date with your favorite Hawken sports teams – but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.  For the remainder of the year, every Monday The Affirmative No will post sports scores, highlights, and accomplishments to our online paper.  Even better, these updates will be written by members of the athletic teams themselves, thus you will get the inside scoop from all of Hawken’s Varsity Teams.  Go Hawks!

Monday, November 2nd

Boys Soccer by Bjoern Kluwe.  The Hawks finished the season as district runner ups in a tight match against an undefeated Lake Catholic Team.  The Hawks were expected to be no match for #1 division 2 team in the entire state of Ohio.  However, the Hawks gave the Cougars a very tough challenge.  The Hawks set up shop in Lake’s territory for almost the entirety of the second half.  Due to an unfortunate goal, the Cougars came up on top by a score of 1-0.  This wraps up the highlight heavy Hawks season which included the first win over University School in four years.

Football by Logan Lair.  Right now the football team is 8-2 and have a big playoff game on Friday against the 2014 Division 5 state runners-up, Canton Central Catholic. Before a loss to Kirtland in week 10, we had won five straight games against Richmond Heights, Berkshire, Independence, Cardinal, and Fairport. Making the playoffs is a really big deal in football because not everyone automatically qualifies. This is the second time going to the playoffs for this year’s seniors, who were part of a playoff team in 2012 as freshmen, so we are looking forward to this opportunity.

Girls Cross Country by Leah Meisel. The girls’ cross country team finished the season with fantastic performances from everyone.  After our 2nd place finish at the Andrews Osborne Invitational, we went on to win the Chagrin Valley Conference meet for the first time in school history! In addition to our victory, each member of the team received some sort of CVC honors. The team then traveled out to Willoughby South high school for the District Championship meet. We placed 6th overall in the race, giving our season a strong finish and something to be proud of. However, the season was not yet over for Julia Aliazzi, who went on to the Regional Championship meet, placing 56th. Overall, it’s been a great season for the girls’ cross country team. Go Hawks!

Boys Golf by Sears Shultz.  Last week, the boys golf team’s season tragically came to an end.  We finished 10-1 overall, were undefeated in CVC, and achieved 3rd place at the CVC post-season tournament.  The squad lost at the district tournament, but we are extremely excited about next year’s team.

The Affno team and I, Madox, would like to personally thank all the student athletes who contributed to the online ‘sports updates’ for the fall sports season!  Do purely to popular demand, the online updates will make a return for Hawken’s winter sports season! Go Hawks!
