Hawken Sports Update: Week of April 11th

We know how busy the school year is and we know how difficult it is to stay up to date with your favorite Hawken sports teams – but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.  For the remainder of the year, every Monday The Affirmative No will post sports scores, highlights, and accomplishments to our online paper.  Even better, these updates will be written by members of the athletic teams themselves, thus you will get the inside scoop from all of Hawken’s Varsity Teams.  Go Hawks!

Monday, April 11th

Baseball by Noah Charnas.  The baseball team has come out of the gates strong this year by starting the season 5-1. Despite battling some treacherous conditions here in Ohio and out in Florida they have been able to grind out the early 5 wins. These wins include two conference wins over Painesville Harvey, as well as victories over Fairport and Elgin Academy. Over the next week, the Hawks will battle Cuyahoga Heights twice and host the Hawken invitational which will include Gilmour, James Rhodes, and Bedford.

Softball by Tori O’Neal.  Softball has been temporarily stalled this past week due to unfortunate weather conditions. We have only played one game this season, last Tuesday (4/5), against Fairport Harbor and although we did not get the outcome we were hoping for, I am very proud of the team. We have an astoundingly small number of players this season, most of whom are freshman. It was nice to see them step up and play in their first ever high school varsity game. I expect to see lots of growth from our team this season.

Boys Tennis by Madox McGrae-Menge.  Due to the weather conditions, the boys’ tennis team has only played one exhibition invitational thus far this season.  In this invitational held indoors at the Cleveland Racquet Club, the Hawks went 3-0 defeating University School, Beachwood, and Shaker.  Led by senior captains Madox McGrae-Menge (second singles) and Devesh Modi (second doubles), the Hawks certainly have state championship aspirations.  Their official season begins today (4/11) against Lexington High School.

Track and Field by Bjoern Kluwe.  10 days ago on April 1st, the Hawken Track & Field team went out to the Twinsburg Invitational.  At the Invitational, the boys team placed 8th overall while the girls took 6th place.  Spencer Wilson won both the shot put and the discus throw.  We hope that this rock solid performance in Twinsburg is only the start of a great season to come.

Boys Lax by Affno Staff.  The Hawken Boys Varsity lacrosse team is currently 1-1.  Last week on April 5th the team defeated Bay 11-9; it was Coach Wilson’s first victory as head coach.  However, three days later the team lost their home opener against Rocky River by a score of 11-5.  The much anticipated game on Saturday vs Seneca Valley was canceled due to snow.

Girls Lax by Julia Hillenbrand.  Girl’s Lacrosse has had a promising start to the season, with a 4-3 win against Stow and a close 4-5 loss against Lake Catholic.  This upcoming Thursday (4/12) we have a huge game coming up against Laurel at home at 5pm.  Please come out and support!
